Where toddlers can paddle
The inlet shallows near the Main Wharf are calm and shallow, the best spot for little ones. The sandy banks of Coulls Inlet near the wharf also have calm, shallow water for splashing about. Pack a bucket and a spade, and stay within arm's reach.
Or try Betka Beach, about five minutes' drive south of town along Betka Road, where the Betka River meets the sea. When the river mouth is closed, the lagoon is shallow and still, which suits small children. The ocean side has surf, rocks and currents, so keep little ones on the lagoon side and check beachsafe.org.au before anyone goes near the surf. Betka has a grassy area, picnic tables, gas barbecues and toilets, which makes it an easy place to spend a morning.
Our swimming guide covers the rest of Mallacoota's beaches.
A flat path for the pram
The foreshore path is the one for wheels: it's paved and flat, good for prams and scooters. There's a playground on the foreshore near the wharf.
Easy walks for kids
The beach walks, the coastal walk and the lake foreshore all suit children and bikes. Two easy walks out of town:
- The Betka Beach loop track is an easy walk of about 2.2 km with river, heath and ocean views.
- The Double Creek Nature Walk is an easy 1 km loop through warm temperate rainforest, about 8 km from Mallacoota, with a picnic ground. Lyrebirds are common.
