Launching a kayak from your holiday house
Guests at three of our houses can get to a launch point for a kayak or paddleboard from the house.
- 7 Allan Drive is waterfront and in town, and you can launch a kayak from it.
- Gabo Views is waterfront and in town, and you can launch a kayak from it.
- Four on Stingray Point has water views but isn't waterfront. You can launch a kayak from it, and it takes dogs (see our pet-friendly stays).
Hammond Properties looks after 17 holiday homes in Mallacoota. To book one of these three, ring 0401 825 547 or use the enquiry form. Booking direct means lower fees than Airbnb or Stayz, and Amelia will help match you to the house that suits you.
Where to paddle
- The Narrows join Mallacoota's Top Lake and Bottom Lake.
- Double Creek Arm is a sheltered arm of the inlet, good for a sunrise paddle among overhanging trees and birdlife.
- Gipsy Point is up the inlet, a quieter, more remote stretch for paddling.
What you might see from a kayak
The inlet has white-bellied sea eagles, pelicans, black swans, cormorants and azure kingfishers. Dolphins and seals turn up from time to time near the inlet mouth, most often early in the morning.
If birds are the point of the trip, Dale runs guided birdwatching cruises on the inlet (see our birdwatching cruise guide), and the Mallacoota wildlife guide covers the rest.
Before you go
- Stingrays are common over the inlet's sand flats, so look where you're walking when you hop out in the shallows.
- Book boat hire for Christmas and January as early as you can.
- Wear a life jacket, take water and sun protection, and check the wind forecast before a longer paddle.
- Put your phone in a dry bag.
Rather swim than paddle?
The water is warmest in late January and February. If the kids would rather splash than paddle, the inlet shallows near the Main Wharf are calm and shallow, the best spot for little ones. Our Mallacoota beaches and swimming guide covers the rest of where to get in the water.
