Mallacoota itself is best known for dusky flathead and for black and yellowfin bream, and offshore there are snapper, gummy shark and kingfish. Our Mallacoota fishing guide has the full list of what you can catch.
What a charter includes
Charters supply rods, bait and safety gear and clean your catch.
Do you need a fishing licence on a charter?
Yes. You still need your own Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence on a Mallacoota Fishing Charters trip; the charter doesn't cover it. The licence is needed for fresh and saltwater fishing. Under-18s are among the exemptions, and you can buy one online.
Fishing yourself: hire a boat
If you want to find the fish yourself, Mallacoota Hireboats is family-run and has been going since 2012. Grant Cockburn hires out power boats, the fast boat Kermit, kayaks and more. It's at 10 Buckland Drive, with the jetty at M38 Coulls Inlet, and it's open seven days, 7:30am to 6pm. Phone 0474 818 058.
| Hire | Half day (4 hours) | Full day (8 hours) | Boat licence? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power boat | $150 | $210 | Not needed |
| Kermit (fast boat) | $170 | $240 | Needed |
| Single kayak | $50 | $75 | Not needed |
Power boats also go out from $110 for 2 hours, and fishing rods are $10 a day. The boat licence and the fishing licence are separate things: a Mallacoota Hireboats power boat doesn't need a boat licence, but you still need a fishing licence to fish from it, unless you're exempt.
Flathead fire in the warmer months, roughly November to April, and bream are caught year-round. Our Mallacoota boat hire guide has more on hiring a boat, and the fishing season guide has more on when to go.
Bringing your own boat
The public boat ramps are at Bastion Point (for the ocean), Karbeethong and near the caravan park in town. There can be a queue at peak times. Bastion Point's beach, lookouts and boat ramp are all open again.

The Flatty Classic in October
The Daiwa Mallacoota Flatty Classic is a three-day flathead fishing competition run by Australian Fishing Classics, with Scallywags as its base. Teams of two to four anglers catch, measure and release flathead, and each team's ten longest flathead count. The 2026 event runs 23 to 25 October and has sold out. Details are at fishingclassics.com.au.
Staying with a boat
"Can we park our boat?" is the question Amelia gets asked most. The answer is yes at 15 of our 17 houses; Lacy's Place and Vista Views don't have room. Bookings are by phone on 0401 825 547 or through the enquiry form, and booking direct means lower fees than Airbnb or Stayz. See all our houses.
